Exceptional advice on tap
Our sparkling speakers delivered an abundance of first-class business advice and inspiration – here’s just a slice of it!
Finding and motivating new talent
An interactive session hosted by Salon Fixer founder, Cory Couts, and UK human resources director for Goldwell and KMS, Ian Hicks, brought to our attention the challenges of recruiting, enthusing and engaging with Generation Y (team members born after 1980).
Key learning: Generation Y is turned off by: long hours for little career gain; handling tricky clients; an arduous journey to work. They are turned on by: a team-playing workforce; a fun environment; ongoing training; exciting challenges.
Top advice: Really understand each and every one of your team members – get to know each their individual goals and dreams, and your business dreams will come true as a result.
Intriguing fact: Generation Y hairdressers are more interested in maintaining a great work-life balance and enjoying a great lifestyle than they are taking home a huge pay-check at the end of the month.
Getting what you want from your staff
Amanda Baines from business-coaching firm, Gholdenphish, talked about how to get your staff – and your clients – to do what you want.
Key learning: Shouting at or ‘telling’ your staff to do something doesn’t work. To get the right results, you always need to explain exactly what you want and what constitutes a good result/response.
Top advice: Spending 20 minutes with each staff member once every two weeks gives you the chance to find out what makes them tick, what stops them doing what you want them to do, and what help they need to do their job effectively.
Intriguing fact: Instead of asking a client to rebook at the end of their appointment, catch them when they are most relaxed – after the shampoo, when they are back in the chair. This can potentially raise your rebookings by 20 per cent minimum.
