Longevity

The first thing you should do on receiving a candidates CV, is to look closely at their employment history. A strong CV will highlight job dedication, clearly demonstrated through long standing positions held at previous posts without just going from job to job. A weak CV is reflected through a candidate who is constantly on the move, as it is essential for a successful business to employ staff that are loyal and show longevity in their positions.

Appearance
First impressions always count so it is crucial that your staff look and act the part. Although hairdressers tend not to have a uniform, look at the tone the candidate sets by their chosen attire for the interview and if this is appropriate. If they look scruffy or like they haven’t made an effort when coming to the interview it’s quite likely this will carry through to their appearance once on the salon floor and a member of your team.

Attitude
Listen to the relevant candidates outlook on factors that are important to you and your business. By identifying their attitude towards important issues such as hard work, progression and education, you will be able to recognise if they would fit in within your company. This is an extremely important area as, unlike ability, attitude is something that is very difficult to change.

Trade test
A fundamental element in any recruitment for stylists through to technicians is a trade test and this should always be carried out previous to employment of any new staff member. When interviewing any potential candidate, ask them to go on the salon floor, do a days trial or possibly even a week to see their technical ability first-hand. When recruiting staff it is easy for job seekers to talk the talk, but by carrying out a trade test, you are able to establish whether they can walk the walk.

Goals
Discuss with the candidate their career objectives and long term goals, comparing these with your companies to ensure that both are mutually compatible. As an employer, it is important that your staff are all working towards the same goals and are driving the company in the right direction. It is always good to know that your staff are there out of their passion, commitment and dedication to what they do, not purely for monetary gain.  endbullit.gif
