A clean sweep: Next step for apprentices
– put that broom down!
Make a plan
Make
a detailed plan – how will this happen? Who will deliver and when? If
you can co-ordinate this training period with school holidays, there
could be an abundance of children out there with foundation haircut
styles, willing to be models, and again look to your bank of training
block heads.
When you feel your apprentice is ready, you
can start to introduce them to your discounted services such as
children and senior citizens.
If you set out a training plan like this in three month blocks, and
stick to it, with timed targets and regular reviews, you will have a
very productive and motivated apprentice on your team. One who, after
their first twelve months, is capable not only of giving an expert
shampoo and treatment service, but also able to apply colours and
re-touches and offer competent foundation, haircutting services to
sections of your salons clientele.
All of this provides a stimulating environment for the apprentice,
provides a great deal of the skill sets needed for NVQ and contributes
significantly to the earnings of the salon...all in the first year,
leaving the second year to focus on high-lighting, foiling, perming,
long hair work and any more in depth training you wish to offer.
Remember, a plan like this is designed to support the training offered
by any outside provider and to create a productive, cost effective team
member for the salon. Let your apprentice know the investment and
effort this takes and the reasons it benefits you and them. Get the
same commitment from them as you have agreed to give and together
you’ll both make great things happen.
