Mark Hill,
Hull
"We make sure we listen to the staff on a daily basis, and treat everyone as an individual so they have help and support in achieving their personal goals and feel fully motivated." They also have team-building fun days and training sessions with Mark and the creative directors. "After anyone has been on a course, they hold their own in-house training session to show the rest of the staff what we can offer clients," says Mark.
Nicole Turnball,
Toni & Guy, London
"Our main priority is to see the potential in every staff member, encourage him or her to achieve their goals and maximise every opportunity to learn. At Toni&Guy Clapham Junction, we arrange for academy art directors to visit and inspire our team with their latest trend predictions, techniques and demonstrations. Plus we encourage our staff to go to the Toni&Guy Academy, go to fashion shoots and shows, London Fashion Week and shadow the company’s top art directors."
Ken Picton,
Cardiff Bay
"We have a team meeting in salon time at least every two weeks as this improves communication and team spirit, and also allows for constant training on how you like the salon to be developed. Individualise all training from constant appraisals with your team members, identify weaknesses and strengths and then build on them. As a salon owner/manager, identify between team building, training and improving individuals, so your team can be good even on bad days. Breed good habits, talk to them often, even about their personal lives, it shows you’re interested in them, create a great environment for them to apply themselves and remember to praise, praise, praise. Apply incentives for hard work; it all helps to improve business."
