Work it baby!
So you’ve got the salon, you’ve got the clientele, but it doesn’t stop there. Making every inch of your salon work hard is an art form. Here, Jimi and Georgina Parkinson, owners of Sessions Spa in Beverley in Yorkshire, outline their tips for making the most of what you’ve got!

Sessions Spa is a beautifully restored former court house where legendary highwayman Dick Turpin was tried. A stylish haven of steel, glass, stone and wood, it has 5,500m of Italian marble, 420 light fittings, 28 salon stations, various treatment suites and a 3,500 sq ft adjoining restaurant. Jimi and Georgina, the couple behind this stunning venue, share their advice on making the most of your space.
Think of your client
Designing a salon or spa depends on the building or space you have available. The overall dynamic and traffic lanes are very important. Staff and clients need to be able to move freely within the environment, and your salon size should be chosen around your business plan – so don’t try to squeeze in too many extra positions. The client should enter and leave through the retail area, while the reception desk and pay point should be close to the entrance – but make sure it’s not too close!
The backwash area should be as private as possible, keeping a lady’s modesty intact at all times. Never – ever – face the salon with a backwash. The clients’ modesty should also be considered when choosing the length of your styling mirrors at the stations.
