Style on a shoestring
Having been shortlisted for the FAME Team this year and winning both the Wella Trend Vision and L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy regional finals, Nicola Hulatt is a name to watch. Here she describes how she created her second collection on a minimal budget but with maximum effort:
How did the collection come about?
I wanted to enter the British Hairdressing Awards, but it's good for profiling too, so I did my research and started building up a team for the photo shoot.
What was the inspiration behind it?
I had spotted a lot of 1930s and 1940s style on the catwalks and predictive websites; I loved the charisma and charm of the trend and thought it would be fun to replicate a refined era where women were immaculate and beautiful.
How much preparation went into it?
Months' worth! I was watching the trends on the catwalk, researching make-up ideas, and creating mood boards to show to the team. I then had to organise dates that eight models, a photographer, a make-up artist and a clothes stylist would all be available – that took quite a bit of re-shuffling!
How did you find the models?
I was working on a very small budget and couldn't afford to pay the models, let alone use professionals, so I took to the streets of Leeds and handed cards out to girls that looked like models or were quirky! Lots turned up to the casting and I took it from there.
Who else worked on the shoot?
I know a fashion designer who did the clothes and she introduced me to a photographer. I liked his work and he was just getting into hair and fashion photography, so he didn't cost the earth.
How long did it take?
I had two days booked for the location, so I did four models per day. A couple of days prior to that I coloured and cut all of the models' hair, which just left the blow-dry and dressing to do on location.
