How to develop your own training programme
janetm.jpg Evaluate your training
Some of the most effective training can take place on the job at low cost, providing you have the resources and the right person delivering it. Be aware of your costs and look at the best value for money. A simple evaluation sheet kept on record can help to inform you what training had the most impact on your business. The record should include the name and date of training, the cost, duration, location and subjects covered. You should also ask your staff if they have used and shared what they learned in the salon and if they would recommend it to their colleagues.

External training
External courses are an excellent motivator for your team. Training held away from your salon in major city locations means your staff can meet other stylists, have a night away from work and have some fun into the bargain.

Contracts
If you are investing all this time and money in training make sure it is logged and that your contract has provision for a fee payback should your staff leave. A typical training log should include each staff member’s training details, including location, date, duration, travel expenses and signatures of both the tutor and the staff member.

Health and safety
Remember to develop an annual plan of health and safety and equal opportunities training. This need not be arduous – just practical and realistic in our working environment. You must keep records and get staff to sign to say they fully understand the subject you have taught.

Choose trainers carefully
Hairstylists love training provided the person delivering the training is skilled, positive and will have empathy for someone learning a new technique. Trainers must be sensitive, caring and able to coach people in a positive and empowering way. It should be every salon manager or owner’s aim to create a culture where people feel safe to learn. It takes time, passion and a strong will to drive standards up. endbullit.gif
