Greg Mendham is the newest member of the Lee Stafford Art Team. Salon Smart caught up with him to hear about his first photoshoot – a stylish men’s collection created on a shoestring.
Why did you decide to do a collection now?
I’ve been at Lee Stafford’s in Soho, London, for four years, and I was told that if I got the models together and came up with a good theme, plus some strong haircuts, I could do my own collection. There’s a strong men’s hairdressing theme running through the business, so I wanted to give it a go!
Where did you get your inspiration?
Burberry, because of the way they use young, angelic-looking models, with sharp styling. I also took inspiration from Alexander McQueen and Dolce & Gabbana. Originally, we were going to use overstated medieval props, such as huge gloves, but it didn’t quite work out. We decided that the hair and the looks were strong enough as they were. But you can see I still used a chain-mail vest in one of the images, which is dropped in as a nice twist.
How did you source the models?
I know someone who works at a modelling agency; one was a cousin; one was a client, who is also an H&M store model; and one of the Art Team knew someone suitable. I only had to pay half of the models!
Who else helped on the shoot?
The photographer, Wolfgang Mustang, is a friend of Lee’s, so that part was easy. I was also assisted and guided by Johnny Russell, our Art Director. We styled it on our own – we were working to a low budget and we cut as many corners as we could.
What about the styling?
We raided Lee’s wardrobe and took the best things out of it. I think it just shows what you can do with a little bit of money and a really good photographer.
How long did the shoot take?
We started at 9am and were done by midday. Preparation is key, and we nailed it. The hair was polished and ready to go when we arrived and no make-up was required. The result was really sharp.
