If she doesn’t listen – keep calmly repeating your message.
If you don’t understand something –ask her to explain it.
2. 121 MEETINGS
If you want people to do what you want them to do you have to spend
time with them. You spend time with them, so that you can make sure
they understand exactly what you want from them.
You spend time with them, so that you understand what stops them, from doing what you want.
What is a 121?
All the salon owners who work with us have a fortnightly meeting with
each member of their team. We call this a 121. It’s 20 minutes of your
time and no more. The 121 ensures that you know what’s happening. It
gives you an opportunity to work with them on their goals for your
business and their personal career development.
You wouldn’t expect a football team to turn up to a match without having any input from their manager would
you? Your team needs your input too.
Listening
In your 121 a key thing is to listen to them properly.
Do not working out what you’re going to say next while they’re still talking.
Don’t finish their sentences for them.
Do understand what they mean not just what they’re saying.
So the 121 meeting makes them feel valued, and all warm inside.
Integrity and commitment.
BEWARE. You can’t cancel these meetings just because something else has cropped up.
If you repeatedly cancel 121s then your team member will feel you really don’t care about them at all.
So you are only allowed to cancel a 121 if you are in hospital – or in prison.
3. REGULAR PRAISING
This is a very effective way of getting people to do what you want them
to do. Don’t underestimate the power of praise. It’s like sprinkling a
little fairy dust on your team. It’s effective, it’s quick and it costs
nothing. We are not talking here about over the top, cheesy praise.
Just say “Well done” when a job has been well done. If you want to get
people to do what you want them to do, Catch them doing something right!
