Launch your own product range

product1.jpgSalon owner and international stylist Paul Bryan recently ventured into the product business. The self-named products aim to cut through the clutter of an over-saturated market and offer an affordable, simple hair care range. Here are his invaluable tips on launching your own product range.

Have a good team behind you!
Ensure you have exceptional people working with you, including development chemists and marketing and design teams. You also need people who understand the vision and the end game surrounding your everyday salon business. The hair product business is one of fighting for shelf space and justifying why your brand deserves every inch, so every aspect of the brand is up for scrutiny.

Hold true to your ideas and don’t be side tracked or swayed without good reason
So many people have an opinion on what you are doing but if they were that good why aren’t they doing it themselves? Listen and take each comment on board but don’t just change your business ideals and plans based on a conversation. If it’s a good idea take it onboard and apply the same planning and research that you did with your original concepts.

Find a good mentor, preferably someone who has been there and got the t-shirt
Whilst there is no such thing as a short cut in business, a leg up now and then certainly helps. Get advice from someone who has achieved success in business, even better if it’s in the same business. Listen don’t just assume their ideas are better – sometimes it’s easy to be blinded by greatness and forget your own brilliance.

Ensure your products deliver what they say they will
There are too many products out there promising to deliver the world yet confusing the professional and retail market. The hair care product market has become so segmented that it is difficult to make an impact without a new invention. Use only the best ingredients that deliver the best results and you will guarantee loyalty to the brand, which will in turn build you a business.

Work towards your vision
Know what the end looks like, how the shelves will look, what the clients will say about your products. If you know your destination it’s easier to plan the route and stay on track
